Bella+Canvas vs. Comfort Colors: Which Tee Is Right for You?

You found the design. You love the raccoon. Or the Bigfoot. Or the deeply questionable woodland life choice printed across the chest.

Now you have another decision to make:

Bella+Canvas or Comfort Colors?

Both are quality tees, but they feel, fit, and wear very differently. Neither is automatically “better.” It mostly comes down to what you want your T-shirt to feel like when you pull it out of the drawer.

Here’s the breakdown.

Bella+Canvas 3001: Lightweight, Smooth and Easy to Wear

Our Bella+Canvas 3001 tees are the lighter of the two options.

The standard solid-color 3001 is made from 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton and weighs about 4.2 oz. Bella+Canvas uses finer, smoother yarns, which gives the fabric a soft, clean feel rather than the heavier texture you might associate with an old-school cotton tee.

The 3001 is also side-seamed with a retail-style fit, so it has a little more shape and structure through the body than a traditional boxy T-shirt.

What it feels like

Think:

Lightweight. Smooth. Soft. Flexible.

It’s the kind of shirt that works particularly well if you don't like feeling buried under a lot of fabric. It layers easily under a flannel, hoodie or jacket and doesn't feel especially bulky on warmer days.

Because it's lighter, it also tends to drape closer to the body than the Comfort Colors.

A note about Bella+Canvas heathers

Not every Bella+Canvas color has the exact same fabric composition.

Solid colors are 100% Airlume cotton, while many heather colors contain polyester. That polyester content gives many heathers a slightly different feel — often a little stretchier with more visible texture than the solid cotton colors.

Here's the breakdown:

• Solid colors are 100% Airlume combed and ring-spun cotton
• Ash color is 99% combed and ring-spun cotton, 1% polyester
• Heather colors are 52% combed and ring-spun cotton, 48% polyester
• Athletic and Black Heather are 90% combed and ring-spun cotton, 10% polyester
• Heather Prism colors are 99% combed and ring-spun cotton, 1% polyester

Comfort Colors 1717: Heavier, Relaxed and Already Feels Broken In

Comfort Color Tees are a completely different animal.

The Comfort Colors 1717 is a heavyweight, garment-dyed, 100% ring-spun cotton tee with a relaxed tubular body. Instead of the lighter retail feel of Bella+Canvas, you get more fabric, more structure and that substantial old-T-shirt feeling people tend to associate with a favorite shirt they've owned forever.

What it feels like

Think: Thicker. Relaxed. Washed. Substantial.

If Bella+Canvas feels like a soft modern tee, Comfort Colors feels more like something you discovered in a particularly good vintage shop.

The fit is intentionally relaxed, with more room through the body. The heavier fabric also tends to hang away from the body more rather than closely following your shape.

Why Comfort Colors Look a Little Different

Comfort Colors uses a garment-dyeing process, meaning the completed garment is dyed and washed after construction.

That process is responsible for much of the character people love about these shirts.

Some Comfort Colors shades use pigment dyes that create a deliberately faded, vintage appearance, while others use reactive dyes for a more traditional color. Because of the garment-dye process, subtle variation is part of the look rather than a defect.

They've also already been washed extensively during manufacturing. Comfort Colors says the shirts are pre-shrunk during the garment-dye and wash process, resulting in very little additional shrinkage at home.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Here's the easiest way to decide.

Choose Bella+Canvas if you want:

• A lighter-weight everyday tee
• Smooth, soft fabric
• A cleaner, slightly more streamlined silhouette
• Less bulk
• Something easy to layer
• The feel of a modern retail T-shirt

Choose Comfort Colors if you want:

• A heavier, more substantial T-shirt
• A relaxed fit
• A broken-in feel
• A vintage or washed appearance

Are Comfort Colors “Better” Than Bella+Canvas?

Nope.

They're just different.

Comfort Colors costs more because it's a heavier garment made using a different construction, dyeing and washing process. That doesn't automatically make it a better choice for everyone.

Some people put on a Comfort Colors tee and immediately decide every shirt they own, going forward, should feel this substantial.. 

Other people put one on and think, Why am I wearing this much shirt? 

And plenty of us like both depending on the weather, outfit and mood.

The Simplest Comparison

If you remember nothing else, remember this:

Bella+Canvas = smooth + light + modern

Comfort Colors = thick + relaxed + vintage

That's really the difference.
