Oscar the Owl did not understand the obsession with flowers. They were colorful, sure—but impractical. Too delicate. Too temporary. Sticks, on the other wing? Sturdy. Dependable. Multi-purpose. So when spring arrived and the forest filled with chatter about blooms and bike rides, Oscar sighed, adjusted his satchel, and rolled his eyes skyward before wheeling out his old bicycle.

It was strictly a transportation choice. He had a particular grove in mind—a place where the best sticks could be found: straight, dry, lightly weathered by winter. Perfect for fortifying the nest he insisted didn’t need more work but might as well be improved. The ride there was quiet, save for the occasional muttering under his breath when a flower petal dared drift across his path.

As he approached the grove, he dismounted with precision, inspecting each fallen branch with the focus of a museum curator. He rejected anything crooked, damp, or suspiciously “decorative.” Into the basket went only the best—no filler. No fluff. Just sticks with integrity. By the time the sun hit its peak, Oscar’s basket was full, his feathers were slightly ruffled, and his satisfaction level was… moderate. He might have even almost smiled. Briefly.

The ride home was smoother. The weight of the basket gave the bike balance, and the scent of pine wasn't entirely terrible. He passed a few other riders—laughing, flower-laden, and absolutely not watching where they were going. Oscar gave them a nod so small it barely qualified as acknowledgment. He was above such fanfare. He had sticks to deliver.

Back at his tree, he arranged the newest additions with a meticulous flair, stepping back to admire the subtle architectural improvements. “Functional. Balanced. Unapologetically practical,” he muttered with approval. Then, without another word, he brewed some acorn tea, settled in, and muttered, “Now that’s a proper day.”.
