Listen up, folks. It was one of those nights. The kind where the forest goes dead quiet, like it's holding its breath. The stars were out in full force, throwing just enough light to cut through the shadows, and the air? Cold enough to sting, but it keeps you sharp.

I was perched high up in the old spruce near the ridge, scanning the forest below. You could smell the frost settling in, mingling with the faintest trace of woodsmoke from the cabins down by the lake. The trees stood like sentinels, their branches heavy with snow, and the wind whispered secrets I wasn’t meant to hear.

That’s when I saw it—movement near the edge of the clearing. At first, just a rustle. Then a flash of something small and fast. It was Milo, of course. That mouse never knows when to quit. He was dragging a sack of something—looked heavy, probably acorns—through the snow. Too exposed, too risky.

From up there, you see things. Things no one else notices. The bobcat, sleek and silent, was already on his trail. Its eyes glinted like molten gold in the moonlight, every step deliberate. Milo didn’t stand a chance. Not without some help.

So, I launched. Wings out, cutting through the cold like a blade. The rush of the wind against my face, the way the trees blur into streaks below—it’s like nothing else. I gained speed, diving low just above the clearing. Timing had to be perfect. Too soon, and I’d spook Milo. Too late, and... well, I wasn’t about to let that happen.

With a snap of my wings, I came in hard, swooping right past Milo, close enough to grab his attention. ‘Move, Milo!’ I shouted—or, you know, screeched in a way he’d understand. He didn’t hesitate. Say what you want about him, but he listens when it counts.

The bobcat? Let’s just say it didn’t stick around once it caught a glimpse of me. Most predators don’t like surprises, and I made sure to give it one it wouldn’t forget. A few close swoops, a flash of claws in the dark, and it slunk off into the shadows where it belongs.

Milo made it back to his burrow, and I went back to the skies, watching, waiting. Because that’s what I do. The forest is my home, and as long as I’m around, it stays safe. Now, who’s got the marshmallows? I could use a snack.
