Milo's Campfire Story: (as told by Milo)

"Alright, everyone, settle in. I’m not much of a storyteller, but if you need to hear what happened the other night, I must warn you. It’s a tale of danger, quick thinking, and... well, snacks.

So, there I was, minding my own business, gathering acorns under the cover of a frosty Winter moon. The snow crunched under my feet, and the forest was quiet—too quiet. You know the kind of quiet where you just know something’s watching you? But I told myself, ‘Milo, don’t be paranoid. You’ve got work to do.’ I had a sack of acorns to haul back to the burrow, and I wasn’t about to leave empty-pawed.

That’s when I felt it—the unmistakable sensation of eyes on me. I froze. The scent of the forest shifted; it wasn’t just pine and snow anymore. It was... a predator. A shiver went down my tail. Slowly, I turned my head, and there he was—a bobcat, sleek and silent, with eyes that glowed like twin lanterns in the shadows.

My heart was pounding so loud, I was sure he could hear me. Running wasn’t an option, I couldn't make it to cover quick enough. I gripped my sack of acorns and thought, ‘This is it, Milo. The end. You’ll be the snack tonight.’

And then, just when I thought I was done for, there was this rush of wind, a shadow slicing through the moonlit forest. It was Billie the Bat! Billie came out of nowhere, wings wide, scarf trailing in the wind like some kind of hero’s cape. Billie let out this screech—I swear it sounded like, ‘Not today, furball!’—and swooped right over the bobcat’s head.

The bobcat froze, startled, then hissed and swiped at the air, but our winged friend was too fast. Billie dove and circled, each pass more daring than the last, until that bobcat decided it had had enough and slinked back into the forest, tail between his legs.

I just stood there, my legs trembling, watching as Billie landed in front of me, looking as calm as ever. ‘You alright, Milo?’, like saving me from a bobcat was just another Tuesday.

I managed a squeaky ‘Yeah,’ and Billie calmly nodded, and said ‘Good. Get home safe.’ And with that, was gone, back into the night.

So, yeah, that’s the story of how Billie saved my tail—next round of acorn cider is on me, by the way. Let's raise a toast to Billie!"
