A Basket for Grandma

Squirrel had a plan. A very cheerful one.

He woke up with a big stretch, a bigger yawn, and a thought that made him grin: “Today feels like a good day to surprise Grandma.”

Not for her birthday, but just because he loved her. And because she once said wildflowers were like smiles from the forest—small, colorful, and always welcome.

So Squirrel hopped on his bike and zipped into the forest, basket bouncing behind him. “Only the best flowers today,” he told himself. Not the showy kind that wilt too fast. Not the ones that smell like old dirty socks. But the kind Grandma liked—soft purples, gentle yellows, and the little blue ones that grew near the stream.

He found golden buttercups near the pond, bluebells under the shady trees, and a perfect daisy growing all by itself on a mossy stump. “This one,” he whispered, tucking it right on top.

By the time he reached Grandma’s house, his basket looked like a rainbow had taken a nap inside it.

Grandma was outside hanging up laundry when he rolled up. “Well look at you,” she said, smiling wide.

“For you,” Squirrel said, holding out the bouquet. “Just because.”

She beamed, gave him a big hug, and tucked one of the flowers behind his ear. “You’re the best surprise I’ve had all day.”

Then they sat together on the porch, sipping iced berry tea and watching the butterflies dance by—just a squirrel and his grandma, and a basket full of love.
