Noelle the groundhog arrived at Urban Wildlife Rehabilitation just before Christmas after spending several days wandering near the entrance of a busy country club parking lot. What first appeared to be a minor head tilt turned out to be the result of a traumatic brain injury, leaving her unable to safely return to the wild.

For the next five months, Noelle became a memorable part of daily life at UWR. She was curious, opinionated, endlessly entertaining, and possessed a personality considerably larger than the average groundhog. She earned the nickname “Drama Queen”—and, as it turns out, there was one more surprise in store: Noelle was eventually discovered to be a boy, and officially became Noel.

When it became clear that release wasn't possible, the goal was to find Noel a placement where he could thrive. He found exactly that at The Zoo in Forest Park, where he joined their wildlife education program as a licensed educational ambassador.

Saying goodbye after five months was bittersweet, but Noel couldn't have landed in a better place. Through the Zoo's educational programs, he'll introduce countless people to a species that's usually seen only as the furry guy raiding the garden.
